Box frame windows are commonplace across our community – so, it’s not surprising if you have them. On the other hand, if you do, and your contractor installed them incorrectly, they could lead to quite a few headaches down the line.
There are a few different ways that windows are installed in the home. There is a right and wrong way to do it. Box frames are wood frame constructions. You’ll see a lot of companies that come in and just install a box frame. They’ll just put the window into an opening and caulk it.
We use high-end 50-year caulk, but even then at some point, that’s going to fail.
The right way to install windows in a wood opening is to look behind the wood. There’s actually a fin that hangs over. The window should overlap and lock it in – sealing it and protecting you from future damage.
Then it’s caulked behind, taped over, and sealed. In the end, you have Azak that goes around it. That will ensure you never get any leaks. Some companies will just put a square window in loosely, causing quite a bit of trouble. Maybe in 1 year or in 5 years, but eventually, there will be a leak.
